LUSTR 9
ILLUSTRATION FESTIVAL
September 22-28, 2022
KAMPUS HYBERNSKÁ, PRAGUE

This year’s first exhibition will be called “Wild Ones – Expressive Tendencies in Illustration.” The curators will introduce the audience to the distinctive Czech tradition of expressive illustration, which can be traced back to the works of the self-made painter and graphic artist Josef Váchal. Following later were the works of Jiří Šalamoun and Květa Pacovská, who had the strongest influence of their generation on the Czech illustration scene. The exhibition will also present unjustly neglected names such as Jindřich Kovařík, Miloslav Jágr, Václav Kabát and Alois Mikulka. Many creators continue to follow their wildness, fascination with children’s drawings, and interest in the unfettered line, anatomy, and perspective. The current generation of artists will be represented by North Bohemian illustrator Martin Raudenský, German visual artist Paul Waak and Austrian illustrator and graphic artist, Sarah Maria Schmidt. The exhibition will also include a selection of works by contemporary Japanese illustrators, curated in the Czech Republic by the author Saki Matsumoto.

The festival will carry on the tradition of celebrating fresh work in the field in the Young Talent Showcase. This freestyle collection will bring, for the third year, the best work to come out of the studios of young illustrators and comic book creators in the last year. Through this selection, the festival aims to share the latest from the illustration scene and to introduce new names. The show will again be divided into two separate sections: comics and illustrations.

WE START 22/9 from 6pm to 10pm with music.

Every other day the exhibitions will be open from 10am to 8pm.

The author of this year‘s visual style is

Jakub Bachorik, one of the winners of the last year‘s festival audience award. And all the graphic designs are by Alexandra Šliková.

Comics anatomy – lecture on how to create a story in comics form with Lukáš Pokorný

Do you like write stories and would you like to create one in a comics form? Everything begins with a script. Even though there is a lot of classes on drawing there is just a handfull of those focusing solely on the story telling. At the workshop with Lukáš Pokorný, you will learn what the classic layout of comic book scenarios looks like, how to think about panels and what trends are currently popular in comcis. In addition, you will also hone in on the process of how to think about the story itself and where to start when we need to come up with one.

On top of the theoretical part, Lukáš has prepared a number of sub-tasks for you that will teach you how to think about comic book scenarios and hopefully guide you towards your first scenario.

You won’t get your first script from the workshop, but you’ll already know how to do it 🙂
